I finally answered all the questions I generated in my previous post. So it was time to get all that stuff out of the boat and prep it for varnishing and painting the inside. As you can imagine, it’s much easier to do all this coating before enclosing the hull with the deck.

I’ve always been able to use the Roll and Tip method to apply my coatings. Roll on the material, then tip it off with a light brush stroke. It requires a lot less masking, but it’s not as fast as spraying. When I was confronted with the prospect of applying 10 coats of clear urethane to the inside of the boat, and having to sand between coats, I decided the time was right to come up with a plan for a spray booth.

So my friend Charles designed a 30 ft long spray booth for me that I could disassemble and store away when it’s not in use. We used panels made of 1×4 that were 10 ft high and 5 ft wide, covering them with 4 mil clear plastic. It’s pretty sweet, don’t you think?
